Tents and Sleeping Gear
A True Camping Story
Seems like it was about 20 plus years ago that our pastor, Ted and some other men from our church went on an over-night camping/hiking trip down in the 'Hercules Glade' wilderness area in southern Missouri. It was late fall and the weather report said it would be overcast and near 40 degrees for the low at night and in the upper 50's during the days. We packed our tents and sleeping bags accordingly. I haven't trusted a weatherman since!
We hiked back into the woods a 'fur piece' and set up camp. Then we hiked for a while and just enjoyed the awesomeness of GODs creation. Near dark, we got back to camp, and set to fixing supper. We ate and talked around the small campfire and turned in to get a great nights rest away from the noise of the city. (continued below)

What gear do I need to get? What food should I bring? How do I cook the food? What kind of wild animals could I run into? How do I pack? What sort of activities can I do while camping? How do I start a campfire?

Brrrrrrr !
Some time about mid-night we started waking up because it was so cold and we'd only come with 35-40 degree sleeping bags. I found Ted laying almost in the fire in his bag and shivering uncontrollably (I had to look up the spelling on that one). It was starting to snow and it felt like it must have been zero out there! My little rat terrier, Candy was down at the bottom of my sleeping bag also shivering and she wasn't about to come out! We found out later that it had gotten down to 17 degrees! (Continued below)
An Important Lesson Learned.
That was one of the most miserable nights that I can remember. But, I learned a great lesson that night. Always take along a sleeping bag and tent that is rated for colder temps than you expect to be in! The next day after it warmed up some we got thawed out and had a great 'hike-a-bout', but I'll never forget that night, nor the lesson I learned. (Concluded below)
